Update – September 2017
The Blain Family completed the process of international adoption and traveled as a family to China to bring home Kai in March of 2016. Kai is thriving as he now walks and talks, but one of the biggest hurdles they jumped through was discovering that Kai needed open heart surgery and has other major heart issues. God has shown up in so many ways through this journey and it has been amazing to see the Blain family walk through this together and with so much grace.
September 2015 – Process of International Adoption
Love Does. This is the message that author, humanitarian and attorney Bob Goff sends and lives by. Love always finds away and can’t be stopped by miles, oceans or limited budgets. It’s also what Areka and Jason Blain are living out and completely believe about their son who lives and China. This boy will give you a cute smile and you can pick him out of any picture, including the CNN story “‘They don’t deserve this kind of life’: Meet China’s abandoned children” about nine-year-old JiaJia at Children’s Hope International in Beijing that aired August 12, 2015. The Blain’s sweet boy in China is under two, was born with down syndrome and has spent most of his life in an orphanage, like many other kids who were born with disabilities. The Blains knew that God had placed international adoption on their heart and they also knew it could take years to fulfill. I remember when they first announced their garage sale fundraiser in summer of 2014 and it has been heartfelt and fulfilling to watch them go through this process.
Domestic adoption outside of foster care is an expensive and lengthy process, and international adoption more so when you know your son lives overseas. Areka recently shared a graphic outlining the 17 steps they have to go through – most involving paperwork. It’s not for the faint of heart and it’s certainly a sign of their commitment to God’s will. We are all God’s children and His love knows no boundaries or borders. He will jump through countless pieces of paperwork and trials to fulfill His plan at the right time.

God designed Christian community and what’s amazing to me is how God is calling so many to be part of the Blain’s adoption story. The people who donated to the garage sale last summer are part of this journey. You can become part of this too as they continue raising funds. Areka has always struck me as someone who thoroughly thinks through every process and step and it doesn’t surprise me that she is honoring China’s rich culture with this current Red Envelope Fundraiser. Choose an envelope and simply donate the number you chose! I will update the image as Areka posts a new one. Here are full details of the fundraiser, a link to their GoFundMe account and your opportunity to stay updated on their adoption story. How amazing to be part of the Blain’s story to bring their sweet boy home from China and become a family of six!
