Traverse City, Michigan has become a food mecca of sorts with so many great restaurants and unique places to dine. This morning I sat through my doctor’s appointment (I’m not dying, just had a weird bump on my foot that turned out to be nothing to cry about). I feel like a kindergartner who is following the rules to sit still, not make a fuss in order to get a sucker every time I go to the doctor. Although I love my doctor, I hate dealing with all things medical, so I decided to treat myself to a delicious lunch. Friends had raved about Mama Lu’s and the review on my Find Me Gluten Free app quickly confirmed why I needed to stop in.
I strapped Teagan on and she quickly fell asleep (which feels like a reward because I can chow down with a happy baby!). The server invited me to sit where ever I wanted and I chose a nearby table. After looking at the menu, I started asking my usual questions to determine whether it’s really safe for me to eat or if I’m risking getting glutened. The server let me know that all tacos can be made gluten free and the only difference was that some of the meats would be cooked in a pan instead of on the grill to avoid contamination. I asked if the chips were fried in the same oil as everything else and smiled as I learned they serve Great Lakes Potato Chips, since they are gluten free and I have consumed many bags. Glancing at the menu confirmed this was listed under chips and salsa.
I ordered chips and salsa and three chicken tacos without cheese, pickled red onion and jalapenos. Looking around while I waited for my food, I noticed the teal chairs at the bar, the TACO sign on a shelf near the entrance, and the blue tin cups on each table that hold the napkins and silverware. The entire feel is very homey and clean.
My chips and salsa came out first so I started munching away as I took in more decor. Three tacos were delicately arranged on a rectangular plate and I was both nervous and intrigued by the chicken skin on top of the seasoned chicken and homemade white corn tortilla shells. I waited about 10 minutes for my food and tried taking just as long to eat them as I tried to savor each bite and each moment Teagan slept. The food was absolutely delicious, but the real test was whether or not I was glutened. I know almost immediately and avoided the notorious migraine through the afternoon.
I highly recommend Mama Lu’s and will be visiting again soon! Here are some other delicious options to devour.
